To some people who knew him, Michael Brown was an ordinary 18year old teenager with much to like about. On his Facebook page he posted photos of himself with his baby niece. In his spare time, he played video games, saw friends and spent time with his family like so many other American teenagers. Shortly before his death, he embraced Christianity at the urging of his grandmother whom he love and respected so much and been due to start college the coming Monday. On August 9th, police officer Mr Wilson fired more shots, hitting the unarmed Mr Brown a total of six times in the head and right arm, because he stole a pack of mini cigars from a convenient store. The body lay in the street for four hours in a pool of blood before it was removed. Residents took to the streets demanding justice and the release of the police officer's name. The protests took place amid long-simmering racial tensions; while only 67 percent of residents were African American, they accounted for 90 percent of citations, 93 percent of arrests, 85 percent of car stops, and nearly 90 percent of all documented uses of force. Over the following days the protests quickly spiralled; tear gas and rubber bullets were used to disperse protesters, rumours arose of gunshots fired from the crowd, heavily armoured vehicles were brought in, and a state of emergency was declared. The unrest drew national and international attention and helped build the Black Lives Matter movement, aimed at fighting for racial justice. #michaelbrown #saytheirnames #bbcnews #aljazeera
