Well this was just the best start to Spring ever. 🥹 This beautiful little girl is one of two baby Tassie Devils starting their journey into life. The little noise she made, is a little call for her sister, ( tucked in below her, in my jacket ) they both getting slowly familiar with the outside world in the past weeks. 🌏 Ive been lucky enough to see Tassie Devils in the wild a few special times over the last year or so living in Tasmania, as a carer I check a lot of animals on roads at night time, but it is a rare occasion. They are very shy creatures, who are a far cry from what movies have portrayed them as. Tassie Devils feed on animals already passed away, they are scavengers, feeding on small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. They have been endangered for over a decade, due to many threats. At the top of that list, is DFTD - Devil Facial Tumour Disease, which had spread and devastated populations around Tasmania, however populations of Devils that are less susceptible to suffering, are being established, with great work being done collaboratively among sanctuaries / wildlife rescues such as where these little girls reside at @eastcoastnatureworld , aswell as the amazing work by @bonorong ~ Spending their time as they grow in a safe open sanctuary space, free from all threats, helping stabilise the population. ❤️ Devils were hunted and poisoned to near extinction in Tasmania in the last century as European settlers saw them as a threat to their livestock / farmland, ( which is ridiculous ) an example of how all that time ago, the blame was still shifted to our poor native wildlife, instead of the industries causing destruction. Devils have been protected now for many years but still also suffer greatly from habitat loss to agriculture, forestry, and getting hit by cars. ❕It is so important for us to raise awareness for our wildlife, who desperately need their homes protected, and because of human impacts, need a little leg-up in the world from us, to live a life safe, and as it should be.
