On days like today, I am reminded that those who continue to work towards an inequitable, unjust world are really really good at it. They are good at it because they work towards a world that has always existed.
It is much easier to build what you know than build what you have never seen before.
We do not know what a world looks like where the powers that be do not continuously marginalize our most vulnerable people.
We do not know what a world looks like where a woman can freely and easily make decisions about her body, regardless of the state she lives in or her socioeconomic status (And be clear, this ruling will hit Black & Latinx folks living in poverty the hardest)
I ask that we feel the sadness and anger that there is to be felt today, and I beg that we do not fall into helplessness.
Dreams are often the antidote for despair.
We will need to radically imagine how to make this country safe for women. There has been a lot of talk and t-shirts about “women supporting women” over the years and I hope the evolution of that is women fighting for women, and women loving women.
The women in America will need our love in monumental ways and they will need love that comes in the form of action, not just prayers and posts- especially the women living in the 13 states facing abortion bans in the next 30 days. This is a moment for great imagination and immense care.
The overturning of Roe V. Wade is devastating.
There is no other way to say it.
But we cannot afford to be hopeless.
May we all turn our love into something that helps someone.
