Gary Schneider in Contortion (I), 1979. Excerpt from 'My Portraits Session with Peter Hujar' presented at the Morgan in 2018 and Jeu de Paume in 2019. This is how Peter saw the image while he was working. He was looking down at the ground glass of his Rolleiflex camera, which was gridded like this, and would have shown him the image, the same size as the negative and reversed side to side (and in color). This portrait is framed like a still-life. Peter first chose the next frame but partially rubbed out the grease pencil on the contact sheet and selected the previous, more formal, frame.
