In two words - absolute opulence. Walking into the showroom it was as if I’d been granted access to historical archives at the MET. The tones were earthy, nearly absent of primary pops, and chock full of majestic material. Shearling, feathers, suedes, and leathers that smelled as though they’d landed fresh from the tannery. And while a couple of modern medieval headdresses inspired me to recite that famous Gladiator monologue, the rest of the collection is actually quite wearable. As we’d expect, with winter comes the weight of lush layers and copious cloth. Swathes of cozy cashmere and warm wools. And for each oversized look there’s a balanced offering of slim sophisticated vintage glamour. Soft silks, taught tulle, and pretty pumps. There’s an organza trench with a structured drape that made me swoon, a jacket to match Salpa, sizeable spherical earrings, and a little corner curated for Lisa Eisner’s novel nuggets. And all the dreamy details! Seemingly infinite intricate beading on a dress that weighed almost as much me, complicated crispy plissé pleats, and interlaced hand woven threads on form fitting seamless dresses. As for essentials...Anderson gets an update in look 7, a clean suit sits in look 10, and Malgosia closes with classics - an effortless knit, relaxed trousers, comfortable sneakers, and Margaux in an updated leather best described as “I can’t believe it’s not butter”. This collection is pure elegance and it’s not hard to see the designers’ reverence for the greats with references to Gigli, Lagerfeld, Cristóbal, and Issey. It permeates through and the rendering of this retrospective is a stunning amalgamation of the past in its purest. And while we know brands take inspiration from each other, the key is knowing what to take, how to incorporate it, and even more importantly, how to make it theirs. And for that, you need one critical element. Refined taste. Is it born or is it made? Well, that’s a discussion for another day but for now I think we can agree...The Row has it in spades. #therow #therowreview #olsentwins #quietluxury
