@emin_ozmen photographed as people gathered outside Istanbul’s City Hall yesterday after a Turkish court sentenced Ekrem İmamoğlu, the city’s mayor, to more than two years in prison and banned him from politics. The court found İmamoğlu guilty of defaming members of Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council for calling them “fools” in a press release three years ago. Supporters of İmamoğlu regard the sentencing as a move to sideline an oppositional figure and potential candidate to stand against Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the 2023 presidential election. İmamoğlu became mayor of Istanbul in 2019 after winning twice against Erdoğan’s ruling AK party, as the election board overturned the initial result following complaints from the AK Party. PHOTOS: Turkey, Istanbul. 2022. © @emin_ozmen / Magnum Photos
