Last week on April 23 at the annual Explorers Club gala in NYC I received the Club’s Explorers Medal for 2022, their highest honor. I’m not big on medals but the Club was giving awards for last year as well, so I got to share the stage with two of my all-time heroes, @beverlyjoubert and @dereckjoubert, who won the medal in 2021 for their wildlife photography, cinematography and conservation initiatives in Africa. In a presentation before the awards, they showed a film clip of a juvenile elephant being attacked by a pride of lions. Beverly and Dereck remained silent while the lions ripped into the elephant who was crying in pain and panic. There were moans and sobs in the audience. The elephant went down. The lions went in for the finish. Then suddenly the elephant rose to its feet, trumpeted and violently shook off the lions and escaped alive. “That is the lesson,” Dereck said calmly.
