My first NYC exhibition of “Ain’t Suga Cute” at @aiconnewyork @aiconcontemporary “Charlie Williams’ photographs capture his grandmother in quotidian moments: opening a refrigerator, snuffing a candle. But she is pictured under the spell of his flash, and via his own loving gaze through the viewfinder that he somehow conveys in the resulting photo. The matriarch’s rococo-stylish life—note the floral wallpaper, and ormolu-mounted furniture—is portrayed with an uncommon unction, such that opening her icebox she may seem to perform a sacred ritual. Similarly, her hand reaching to put out the candle is a religiously precise moment, like a christening: a hand anointing her grandson’s life as an artist.” I’m very thankful for this opportunity and to work alongside many talented artists.
