Fueled by their rage and thirst for freedom, women and girls have taken the streets of Iran for four weeks in mass protests against patriarchy in the state and patriarchy in the home. Voices stands in solidarity with #MahsaAmini, and the visionary leaders, the activists, the artists, to put forth the language, visual art at the core of their feminist movement. From across seas we chant “woman, life, freedom” with you, demanding a world without patriarchal power.
The #MahsaAmini protests began after Iran’s so-called “morality police” murdered a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in custody for leaving some of her hair visible in violation of Iran’s hijab law. Since then, dozens of young women and girls have led protests demanding for justice, and not just the right to dress as they please, but the fundamental human right to choice. They are now fighting side by side with their brothers, fathers and husbands, who also stand against how patriarchy shows up in their lives, through militarized and corrupt theocracy. This is the first time in the country’s history that it has experienced a counter-revolution led by women. Dozens of women have been killed in the struggle at the hands of Iranian police so far. We raise a candle in memory of them.
In the words Audre Lorde:
“Your silence will not protect you. But for every real word spoken, for every attempt I had ever made to speak those truths for which I am still seeking, I had made contact with other women while we examined the words to fit a world in which we all believed, bridging our differences.” We boldly use our Voices against injustice, loudly in unison with feminist voices around the world.
