In “La gran América” (2017), Teresa Margolles touches on the hot-button topic of immigration—specifically Mexican immigration into the United States.
The artist uses dirt and clay from the bottom of both sides of the Río Grande to hand-make 700 cobblestones, which are then fired and polished. Together, the pieces are one large installation, representing a collective experience. Each brick represents a Mexican immigrant who has attempted to—successfully or not—cross the border into the United States, in pursuit of the “American dream.” #HispanicHertiageMonth #Latinxartists #TeresaMargolles
