As a graduate student, I was asked to interview Mr. Haile Gerima alongside my colleague Dagmawi Woubshet for this Callaloo conference. I will never forget the sensation—the clarity of his passion, direction, and vision was so vital, so alive that it felt as if I was sitting next to a sun. Blinding. Seeing. Unrelenting. (In the pictures, I look like I’m in utter awe). The transcript exists as an article in the journal Callaloo later reprinted in the Vision and Justice Issue of Aperture. When I put that issue together, I knew that an interview with Ava DuVernay, if she would agree, coupled with this interview with Haile Gerima. Now, @ava and @arraynow are letting us all see the gifts that have come from this sun of a man, Mr. Gerima, in the form of a new 4K restoration of Sankofa, debuting on Netflix and a screening of Ashes and Embers at Array on Saturday—the beginning of a set of tributes to Mr. Gerima. What an absolute joy. What a reason to celebrate. This is how it’s done. Honoring those who opened doors, sustained the vision, and inspire us anew. That’s that ashé right there. The power to make things happen.
