Today is the start of non-binary awareness week. I’m here to tell you language matters. Once I learned what it meant to be a transgender non-binary person, I was able to start to be at peace with my childhood. The language was the missing puzzle piece I needed to understand myself. I was 10 years old when my Mom asked me if I was a boy, it was very obvious from a young age that something was missing. I answered no, default answer to yes I guess I’m a girl then? If visibility and language was progressive enough when I was young, my mom would’ve followed and asked “are you non-binary? Do you exist somewhere outside the binary? Or maybe float in the middle?” I would’ve answered yes at 10 years old. Kids understand themselves. Kids deserve to be taught about queer people and what it means it be queer.
