As the next annual UN meeting around Climate and biodiversity take place, let us remember there is a particular industry disproportionately driving up the harm risk, the death toll, the irreversible damage. And we need to put phasing out and a green transition into action. Politicians answer to oil corps, not the other way around, money circulates and halts because of oil, journalists and activists are murdered and kidnapped for standing up to big oil and lawyers are put under house arrest, and threatened by the companies that help us put gas in our engines. They blame us for the consumption of their product but simultaneously prevent us from accessing (at reasonable prices) alternative energies For every dollar the climate movements have, the industry we’re up against has hundreds and for every lawyer on our side, they have hundreds. The fight has been rigged in their favor for such a long time, and continues to be. And even further- among climate groups, Bipoc are in most danger from violence, murder, dispossession at the hands of big oil than other groups. We have even fewer dollars and lawyers to help us fight for our lands and way of life. Because of this, every time one of us speaks out, names the culprits (weather in our communities or on large platforms) we endure a risk, we put ourselves in a kind of danger. This is something people forget— speaking against power comes with a price.
