“When I went to Ghana I was at Home.” - Dr Maya Angelou 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 Dr. Angelou moved to Ghana in 1962 as a single 34 year old mother. She taught at the University of Ghana and continued her work as a freehance writer. She wrote for the Ghanaian Times, wrote and broadcast for GBC Radio, and worked and performed for Ghana’s National Theatre. She joined a tight knit community of African American scholars that included W.E.B Dubois, Pauli Murray, Julian Mayfield. Their growing community was crucial in sharpening a pan-africanism among Black leftists, writers and activists who wanted to see what an independent Black state looked like. When her friend and comrade Malcom X visited Ghana, they met with local students and activists to discuss the persecution of Black people living in the US at the height of the Jim Crow era. This December, we’ll be walking in the legacy of Dr Maya Angelou, and honoring our connection to the motherland, healing through the idea of what home looks and feels like. 🎭Our VOICES audio play launches December 18,2022 @nubuke_foundation.
