Even to those familiar with the process of having a suit tailor made, having one made by Emily Nolan is an adventure – one that starts with a cup of tea.
Nolan, 28, learnt how to sew from her grandmothers. She founded E Nolan as a ready-to-wear clothing line in 2016 before moving into bespoke tailoring in 2019.
Obsessed with “appropriating the beautiful techniques of menswear for everyone”, she won a reputation among brides and clients looking for occasion wear.
The surprise growth segment, she says, has been women wanting suits. “At first I wondered, ‘who needs a suit? Will anyone come to see me?’ But suits are not just for work any more.”
Nolan is photographed at her Melbourne showroom by Josh Robenstone.
