Over the coming week, we hope you will join us in dedicating some intentional time for reflection on place. We encourage you to find a moment outside and allow yourself to connect with the earth beneath your feet; pause and consider the history of the land you call home. Here in Port Townsend, our coastal region, defined by the Salish Sea, is occupied land of the S’Klallam (“strong people”) and Chimacum people.

In the United States, the end of November brings Thanksgiving celebrations and also the National Day of Mourning, a day of remembrance and acknowledgment of the current and centuries-long struggles of Native people across the land. Native Land’s (@nativelandnet) interactive map is an excellent resource for finding which Indigenous lands you live on.

You may also enjoy listening to This Land, a binge-worthy podcast by Crooked Media (@crookedmedia). It begins as a “True Crime” genre story but finds its stride through a caring exploration of Native American history and nuances of tribal sovereignty and land ownership.
