Today is my oldest’s last day of high school!! His childhood is officially wrapping up, and I’m experiencing all the bittersweet emotions big time. How am I supposed to deal? Is there a manual for this? Who am I actually kidding? I never read manuals anyway.🥴 We ate dinner at this table last night. We listened to music, talked about life and adventures, and it felt right. Enjoying the space together after it spent so much time under construction made all that work worth it. My therapist jokes with me that having my house under constant construction is the perfect metaphor for my life, and I have to agree. Beyond enduring my never-ending construction on our home, I think about all of the other change Locke has experienced as a McLaughlin kid. When he was only 7, we moved all the way across the country, leaving the aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins he had grown up with in such close proximity. Once we got to LA, we moved from Los Feliz, to the Valley, to our current house. Locke has been homeschooled, gone to public school, and private school. Our family also went through big shifts as we reevaluated our worldview and all of the questions that come with that. And like all of our kids, the past few years were fraught with upheaval as they experienced going to school through a global pandemic. As Locke prepares to go off to college, I hope he sees all the construction, (both literally and metaphorically) as an integral part of the process that made him the beautiful, deep, thoughtful soul that he is. He is a human who embraces adventure and leads with curiosity about the people, ideas, and world around him. I am so proud of you, @locke.mc 🥹.
