Every day, a well-choreographed changing of the guards unfolds at our Kaluku mud bath. Apollo the rhino arrives first. After enjoying two milk bottles and a leisurely wallow, his Keepers shepherd him away so the elephants can have their turn. (It’s better that the species don’t mix; rhinos are very territorial by nature, while elephants can be quite mischievous.) However, Apollo is a nosey fellow, and he often sneaks back to spy on the little herd as they mud bathe. As you will see, Mayan is on high alert and acts as a one-elephant security force. After the Keepers tell him to stand down, he reluctantly rejoins the herd, where little Rokka interrogates him with a raised trunk — no doubt asking if he managed to keep the rhino at bay. If you watch to the end, you’ll find out whether Mayan was successful or not! 🦏🐘 —— Video © Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #SheldrickTrust #SWT #ApolloSWT #MayanSWT #RokkaSWT #rhino #blackrhino #kenya #whyilovekenya #friends #elephants
