Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to spread awareness and spotlight the issues we face as indigenous people in so called Canada & Honor the resilience of residential school survivors. Unfortunately this day has become a performative write off for non native people to give the illusion that they stand with indigenous people, wearing an orange shirt one day a year is not enough. In order for real change to take effect, on top of spreading awareness we all need to step up in our communities and fight for change and to have the voices of our indigenous communities heard on a personalized non generalized level. We encourage you to seek out the indigenous groups or individuals in your community and give back to THEM & amplify their voices whenever possible to assist in real change! Here in Vancouver you can donate direct to community at the Guardians of the 215+ Vigil at the Vancouver art gallery, they accept money, traditional medicine and supplies & food for the keepers of the vigil who spend 24 hours a day protecting the beautiful instillation initiated by the incredible Tamara Bell! To learn more about orange shirt day and donate on a generalized level please visit: orangeshirtday.org DISCLAIMER FOR ANY CONCERNED PARTIES: We Recieved permission from The vigil keeper to respectfully conduct this shoot, after a very emotional and powerful ceremony lead by @chelazonleroux we set up under supervision and guidance of Erica (vigil guardian) with the most respect to not disturb the vigil, but to combine our art around the art of the vigil to use our platforms to echo the importance of the EVERY CHILD MATTERS movement to our online communities.
