Dr. Lewis guest-edited the award-winning 2016 issue of @aperturefnd devoted to photography of the Black experience, which explored a fundamental question: “What is the role of culture for justice in the United States?” Among her selections for this reading list: Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present, by @debwillisphoto. The book is “a meditation on the many negotiations in the marriage of race, beauty, and power from a photo historian and photographer,” Sarah writes. “Few understand the nexus of power and beauty and how it operates more than Dr. Deborah Willis.
