On one level, we know which watches customers have given a big tick to. They’re the ones with wait lists and model names we’re as familiar with as the brands that make them: Daytona, Submariner, Nautilus, Royal Oak.
But if such pieces have gained notoriety for their popularity, not to mention inflated prices on the secondary market, there’s a raft of watches jostling for position behind them, all hoping to strike a chord with dedicated enthusiasts.
These are folk the bystander might regard as unnaturally interested in timepieces, for whom one watch is scratching the surface, several is a bare minimum and a dozen timepieces means merely making horological progress. Some buy a watch a month, and this is who watch brands are really targeting.
So, what's on a serial buyer's wish list? Watch editor Bani McSpedden looks at the recent releases finding favour, including the Richard Mille RM UP-01 pictured, a collaboration with Ferrari.
