This is a photo of the graveyard on Coiba Island off the coast of Panama taken by my friend @peter_houlihan. Peter is one of the world’s great conservation biologists, and Coiba is a Unesco World Heritage Site where Peter does research. Back in the day it was a prison colony as notorious as Devil’s Island. In 1972 I got arrested and jailed in Panama on a deal that went bad trading smuggled ammo for emeralds. I was locked up in Carcel Modelo, on the mainland, a feeder prison to Coiba, but a place that itself deserved a low ring in Hell: while I was there, I saw five guys get killed. I wrote about this in an early version of my recent memoir Life Lived Wild, but along with several other stories, it hit the editor’s floor. I decided to post some of those stories that got cut on my website, and my prison story was so grim I divided it into two stories. The first one called Passage into Darkness, with Peter’s photo, just went up, so check it out. I’ll post the second one in a week or two.
