Let's talk about what's going on with #Latinx founders in the plant-based space... you’ll want to save this post 🥲 I was excited to open up my @technically.food newsletter this morning and see Larissa Zimberoff cover the fact that there are no mainstream culturally-specific plant-based brands and founders in the Hispanic and Latino market. This is something I've been talking about quite a lot in recent podcasts, including my most recent one on The @nimai_delgado Podcast (check out his YouTube to listen). Here's why it's crazy... 🇲🇽 California, the state where 40 alternative protein companies are located, was once largely Mexico 👩🏽 ... and the state's biggest city, Los Angeles, is a Hispanic-majority population. 👋🏼 The second biggest state in America, Texas, has a 40% Hispanic population! 💰 Hispanic consumer buying power now tops $2T dollars! It makes no sense. This is what I am talking about when I talk about the lack of diversity in the #foodtech space. There are a few great leaders out there working on this, but not enough. Here are some I know: - Lisa Feria, Managing Director of Stray Dog Capital (changing investments) - Kayla Castañeda, CEO of @drinkaguabonita (shaking up the beverage space) - Michelle Ruiz, CEO of Hyfé Foods (unlocking the power of mushrooms) - Marissa Cuevas Flores, CEO of @microterra.mx (harnessing science for plant-based innovation) - Karina Martinez, CEO of @theavanahouse (reshaping the media narrative for food brands) ... Is it a coincidence these are all women? I might be biased.
