Back in print from @phaidonsnaps . First published in 1998, revised and expanded in 2007, and translated into 10 languages (most recently Mongolian), The Nature of Photographs describes how the intrinsic attributes of photography determine how it translates the world we see into a photograph and how they effect perception. John Szarkowski wrote of the book:
“I'm glad I lived long enough to see it; it is intelligent and sensitive and knowledgeable — knowledgeable in the sense that it was written by a serious and ambitious photographer, out of the experience of a serious and ambitious photographer. Also, it has very good pictures in it; nothing is included for merely illustrative reasons.”
