At the heart of “La Maison de la Lune Brûlée” lies a profound exploration of Eastern philosophy, contrasting with Western notions of fixed essences. As Byung-Chul Han notes, “In the far east, far more than in the west, the way things flow into each other is openly visible[…] Essence is difference. Thus, essences block transitions. Absencing is in-difference. It liquefies and un-bounds.”
Lee Bae’s work, centered on the cyclical recurrence of the daljip taeugi ritual and the use of charcoal, embodies this Eastern perspective by dissolving rigid boundaries and inviting reflection on the fluidity and impermanence of existence.
