Thanks to @jerrysaltz for his moving tribute to Jennifer Bartlett, who died last week. I sub-let Jennifer's loft in the summer of 1976, while she, coming off the success of "Rhapsody" was on a world tour. The epic work had been shown at Paula Cooper's that Spring, and had been sold to a collector for a then un-imaginable sum. Jennifer was well-read, and that summer I made some discoveries on her bookshelves, among them "The Blood Oranges" by the great, under-appreciated John Hawkes, with whom I later became friends. The tree of life indeed, and the laying on of hands.
