When @tarakerzhner first learned about Indigenous place names stories from @lennecefer, she realized they could help non-Indigenous climbers connect more deeply to public lands. She went to Smith Rock, also known as Animal Village, a place that is important to both her family history and her own history as a climber to hear its creation story told by Elder Wilson Wewa of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. The story he shared made her rethink what stewardship could look like for all those who recreate in Smith Rock—and beyond. Oral storytelling by Wilson Wewa. Animation by Jon Yellowhair.
