Last day to see “Never Free To Rest” @charliejamesgallery - “Never Free To Rest” compares the life and origins of the rock pigeon to the stereotypes and myths of the constructed identities of Black men in the United States of America. The title of the show is drawn from a quotation by James Baldwin: “In America, I was free only in battle, never free to rest - and he who finds no way to rest cannot ping survive the battle.” “Never Free to Rest” was originally created in 2021 for the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities Gallery as part of High Stakes Art, a multi-year project featuring exhibitions as sites of social and political engagement, funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.
