Jay-Z and Cavario Hunter, as photographed outside the back door of the Apollo Theater in Harlem in March 2000. Hunter is one of the co-founders of the quarterly Don Diva street-life publication, which he launched in the Winter of 1999 along with Tiffany and Kevin Chiles. Often named as the Original Street Bible, for over 20 years the magazine has delivered inside stories of hip-hop heavyweights and cocaine kingpins who trust that the editors would get their stories right. Before he worked as the publication’s editor-at-large, head writer and public spokesman, Hunter worked the streets across Harlem selling crack cocaine. During his childhood in the neighborhood he witnessed his mother play the role of a heroin kingpin in the orbit of Nicky Barnes; and his father was gunned down in Philadelphia while making a large purchase of liquid PCP. He turned his back on the streets at the age of 35 to pursue street journalism, and worked for the magazine until 2006. During his time there he conducted interviews with street figures such as Detroit’s crack pioneers The Chambers Brothers, BMF’s Big Meech, Chicago’s Gangland “King of Kings” Larry Hoover, and Baltimore’s Super Kingpin (and Cavario’s uncle) Melvin “Little Melvin” Williams. He also awarded features to Kanye West and Eminem early in their career, and gave 50 Cent his first national cover and mentored him in The 48 Laws of Power to ensure his success in the entertainment industry. #JAYZ
