Pancho
the day the power went out on my grandma’s side of the rancho we had to go over to her compadre’s place to grind the corn, she had plans of making condoches that day and had to make it happen somehow. the people in the rancho help each other out in every way they can, my visits always remind me of how important community is. back when I was an oilfield man, I worked with Pancho’s son. as I sat waiting for the women to finish grinding the corn, I spoke with Pancho while eating fresh tortillas made by his granddaughter.
me: “I’m a photographer, would you give me the permission to photograph you?”
Pancho: (silent)
Pancho’s daughter: “His hearing is poor. (turning to Pancho) He says he’d like to photograph you, let him so he can show the people over there, your son.”
Pancho: “Oh yes, of course.”
