Not only is it the first of these awards, locally, where we have been allowed to celebrate somebody that, historically, might have been considered too ‘provocative’ for this particular accolade, but also because this is a human whose work personally inspires me (and has done so for years) and who I believe lives in their truth every day and gives others permission to do so, too, in a way that is very important.
