Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek, photographed at Baseline Studios for the French hip-hop magazine Groove by Armen Djerrahian in October 2003. The photographer used a Nikon F4 camera with Polagraph film to capture the Roc Representers.
This exclusive outtake comes from The Black Album-promoting shoot where Djerrahian captured the famous black-and-white image of Jigga throwing up the diamond while looking through his hands at the camera. During the shoot a member of the Roc-A-Fella team kept tapping a frustrated Armen on his shoulder to remind him he only had five minutes with Jay and he needed to hurry up. It is well known that the rap mogul doesn’t enjoy the expectations of photo shoots so likes to make them as short as possible.
The French-Armenian photographer had first shot Jigga back in April 1997 in London while he was on tour with The Fugees. Jay liked the photographs so much he brought the entire set and used one of the images for the cover of his In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 international single “Wishing On A Star.” Djerrahian also shot the Buffalo show of the “Hard Knock Life Tour” in 1999.
