Inspired by my IG live with the lovely @bettinas_kitchen (saved in highlights if you want to watch!) I thought I’d do a post on longevity. It’s becoming topical again and it’s an area that has so much excellent research from animal models to big epidemiological studies and some excellent biologically plausible pathways to explain a lot of it. It’s actually a lot to fit in one post so I’ve put my favourite recent review of the evidence by @prof_valterlongo in there for those who want to read the detail (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2022.04.002). The science agrees with the @bluezones research - the longest lived humans have traits in common: - an active outdoor lifestyle (often growing/catching your own food) - plenty of pulses, beans, whole grains every day - occasional or rare animal protein consumption - lack of ultra processed foods in the diet - a close knit supportive community/family - a sense of purpose every day The main pathways highlighted here are the IGF-1, mTOR & GH. It’s super interesting to me how closely linked these pathways are to a typical Western Diet rich in animal protein (eg methionine) and simple starches.
