What did a nine-year-old girl in 1985 watch on a Sunday, in a home with only free broadcast TV as an option? Lots of PBS and WPIX. Most of my content was syndicated sitcoms and classic movies, usually about 20 years old.
And then one day came Barefoot in the Park. Up until then, my first crush was @realmikejfox in Family Ties. A boyish charm, charismatic, that sneaky smile. I just loved him so much. And still do.
But here was this classically handsome man in a tailored suit. What had happened to me? What was I discovering? Was the suit elevating my attraction? Was I even too young to understand the impact?
Looking back, I can say with certainty that this was the exact moment I realized what a man in a suit does to me. And I can also safely say that every man since has been held to the standard of Robert Redford.
I had always loved fashion. As many of you already know, I have my grandmother to thank for that. But up until that point, fashion was centered around women’s clothing and accessories. How did a man’s fashion suddenly make him more attractive to me? That was an entirely new revelation.
Even in the movies that followed (The Great Gatsby, The Way We Were) or even glimpses of him in daily life, I watched just to see him in a suit. And when he wasn’t in a suit, when it was a tweed blazer, an open-collared button-down, and a pair of jeans, a classic peacoat, or a cable-knit sweater, he still looked elevated. Never sloppy. He knew that proper tailoring and quality threads could refine every look.
That was the moment I realized a man’s clothes could elevate his presence, his charm, his attractiveness. That was the power Robert Redford carried. A brilliant actor, of course. A philanthropist, an advocate, a husband and father, and probably so much more that those of us who never met him in person could never know. But to me, he will always be remembered as the man who awakened something in me, and as one of the first true male style icons. 👔
