Today is World #SexualHealthDay. Did you know that on any given day, more than 320 million people around the world are menstruating? But many people around the world lack the proper access to menstrual products, services, and information. This is period poverty. CARE and our incredible partner @womena_official are working with women and girls, as well as men and boys, to break the cycle of period poverty in Uganda. “I was at school when I got my period for the first time, I did not understand what happened and bled through,” says Alice, one of many women who participated in a menstrual hygiene course with CARE and WoMena. Alice was afraid to share the news at home, and there was not much help to get there either. Her mother forced her to stay inside. When Alice received a menstrual cup and information about her own body, it changed her whole life. Others, including parents, also changed the way they looked at menstruation. Alice’s father Rafik believed that women should be isolated when they were menstruating. “After I took a course about menstruation and I was told that everything was a myth, I slowly began to change,” says Rafik. “Now I know that menstruation is a normal part of life and that it does not change anything, but that life continues as usual.” Alice wishes she had received information about her own body earlier. “I got pregnant because I did not know enough about my body. It is a big challenge for the girls who do not get enough information.” But the future looks bright. Alice is now training to become a laboratory technician. “I want to make a difference for my family and for my local community. It's great what this project has done, and it has proven that I am someone who can make things happen.” 🙌 Click on the link in our bio to find out more! 📷: Hajarah Nalwadda/CARE Uganda #SexualHealth #ReproductiveHealth #WomensHealth #SexualHealthAndRights #menstruation #PeriodPoverty #InvestInWomen
