Jaÿ-Z and James "FlickMaster" Moore, photographed during a Reasonable Doubt promotional session at the legendary Beat Street Records in Brooklyn on May 22, 1996. The store spanned the length of a city block and was the self-proclaimed biggest record store in Brooklyn before it was closed in 2006. Local acts like Jaÿ and Biggie promoted their music for years there before achieving major label support.
At this point FlickMaster was well-known to Jigga, with them having met through Roc-A-Fella Records receptionist Omi. In '95 he had heard one of the Brooklyn rapper's early appearances on The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, immediately knowing he was destined for greatness. The next day he rang the Roc-A-Fella offices at 17 John Street to inquire about when his debut album would be dropping.
According to Moore, Omi was "mad cool" and would hook him up with album samples and snippets in the lead-up to its June '96 release, in return for his support on the street. Over time his regular visits to the John Street offices made him cool with the team and he became one of Jaÿ’s personal photographers. He spent years taking photographs of Jigga and his crew at the office, in the studio, at industry parties, on tour and at promotional events, and at the label's music video sets.
Flickmaster’s Hov archive is lengthy, and I am pleased to announce an exclusive collaboration that will see him releasing a never-seen photograph each week via ANJ.
