Painted in 1878 by Edouard Manet. It’s called “Rue Mosnier decorated with Flags” So how many paintings have you come across depicting a person with a limb difference? Exactly. In my new book SEMI-FAMOUS I describe finding this painting at @gettymuseum. It remains the only historic art I’ve *ever* seen depicting an amputee using crutches. Finding amputees at all in art is exceptionally rare, and when they do show up it’s like a war scene or something grotesque. You never see pieces like this one, where someone with a limb difference is just walking along the street, being a normal human. PS Plot twist: the artist (Edouard Manet) lost his left leg a few years after painting this in 1878 🤯
