Thinking of Samella Lewis, who passed today. She paved a way for so many. She and Ruth Waddy co-edited the two-volume series Black Artists on Art (1969 and 1971). These volumes exemplify the dual labor that challenges researchers on art by artists of African descent—simultaneously researching and writing while crafting the archive itself. I am so grateful for Dr. Lewis’s vision and labor, and all of the scholars, artists, and curators who carry her work forward.
