A friend of Warhol’s from the ’60s onward, Dennis Hopper is one of the few individuals from his underground film days who later become the subject of a commissioned portrait. Prior to sitting for a Screen Test in 1964, Hopper appeared in Warhol’s early film Tarzan and Jane Regained ... Sort Of, which was filmed in Los Angeles in the summer of 1963. Warhol had traveled cross-country for the exhibition of his Elvis and Liz paintings at the Ferus Gallery, and the two met during his trip. Curiously, the portrait commission had little to do with their friendship, but came about in 1970 as a joint venture of five Fort Worth collectors. A number of Polaroids of Hopper by Warhol, stamped January 1970, were found in his Estate. However, Warhol used a photograph by Henry Grossman for the portrait, taken during the filming of Hopper’s The Last Movie (1971). He painted 13 portraits of Hopper, in two styles: his hard Pop style of the ’60s and what he called his new “abstract” style. The Fort Worth collectors opted for five of the more painterly canvases. More than 25 years later, Hopper also acquired one of the more “abstract” portraits.
