A letter to @brittneyyevettegriner Brittney, I wept real tears for you yesterday. It surprised me not because I didn’t feel sad or angry about how you are being used and forgotten but because I thought, by this point, after all these years, the pain would lessen. The reality is the world hates black women especially rebellious, outspoken, proud, strong and queer black women. You are all of those things and more. I can’t imagine the psychological and physical trauma that you are and have been experiencing. I hope that we as a community will make enough noise to bring you home. The other issue that no one has mentioned is why you were put in this position in the first place. The problem is with the @wnba and the fact that you, as an Olympic gold medalist, and other players still in 2022 have to leave family, friends and home behind to play basketball in other countries. Dangerous countries. Just so that you can make a living. If the WNBA was paying players what they are worth, you wouldn’t be in this position. While we are here fighting to bring you home, we also need to acknowledge the sexist, patriarchal and homophobic people and systems that have led to this. You shouldn’t have been there period. I know that if you were paid by the WNBA what you deserve or if your stature was smaller or your skin lighter or your politics quieter, you’d be home already. Actually, you never would have left. I am so so sorry. We won’t stop until you’re home.
