"I have always done lots of solo travel & adventures. When I added a baby, now toddler to the mix it only made sense for me to carry some type of satellite communicator, especially as I ventured into remote areas.
Here are 3 reasons I love using my @garmin #inReachmini.
1. I can send messages to loved ones. This was my main motivation in getting my inReach Mini. You can send pre-written messages directly from the device. Whenever I camp without my husband I send him a pre-written message letting him know I made it to camp. He then also receives a pin of my location. You can also send unique messages... Be sure your device has a clear shot of the sky to send messages more efficiently.
2. I love being able to check the weather in the backcountry. There have been several incidents where the weather is looking unpredictable or even different from what my prior researched showed. I can use my inReach Mini to get an updated forecast. It gives me hourly details of temps, winds, wind gusts, precipitation, etc. The premium weather forecast does cost extra if requesting. I have listed our subscription info below for our device.
3. Having an emergency SOS button provides peace of mind in the backcountry. It is protected by an outer casing. If pushed on accident, you can cancel the SOS by holding the SOS button, a cancel message will appear. We have never used the SOS, but we know people who have.
You need a monthly subscription for your @garmin device. We pay $15 a month which gives us monthly unlimited pre-written messages, 10 unique messages & unlimited SOS. On our plan if using tracking we have to pay $.10 per tracking point & we pay $.50 for additional unique messages sent. If using tracking or leaving “breadcrumbs” I set it to 4 hour intervals so we pay less. But even so $.10 isn’t a lot to pay when it comes to your safety." 🎥: @laurhronek
