#terroirtalks Our recent visit to Marc Pesnot's legendary Domaine de la Senechaliere was a happy one: we got to witness the intriguing flaming chariot (a smart, old-school 2-in-1 solution that protects the freshly pruned vines with the smoke of the old cut wood all while getting rid of it), enjoy the uplifting marine air of this westernmost part of the Loire Valley while taking in Marc's impressive savoir-faire among his old vines, or indulge in his Japanese partner-in-crime Ryosuke Furuya's delicious duck #ramen 🍜 Still, the star of the show were the wines! With his vineyards getting older and wiser (up to a hundred years old!) and no less than 8 different soils, Marc has recently shifted his top-shelf MissTerre cuvée into an even higher rank by vinifying and bottling the grapes from these unique terroirs separately. "I think that the wine lover's palates and the food scene have become more refined and fond of delicate nuances and I felt that my wines should – and could – reflect this evolution," Marc explains. "The Melon de Bourgogne grape is a perfect accomplice for that as it is very sensitive to the rock on which it grows and readily showcases its character, especially when working with old vines like we are." 💯 true: tasting through the different flavor profiles almost reminds one of the different Chablis crus (without the hefty price tag .) Our heart goes to the Micaschiste: a poor, hard and old soil that, along with Pesnot's light and savvy hand in the cellar brings wines with an almost ethereal vibe, precision, and intensity of flavors. A dash of flowers, a hint of citrus, maybe some green apple, all intertwined with rocky, saline backbone and mouth-watering acidity. A true treat. (PS.
