INSIDE THE MYSTERIOUS AND STRANGE WORLD OF LOCAL ARTIST HOWARD LERNER On a quiet part of Greenpoint Ave, the windows of a building act as a canvas featuring a gentleman with a dour expression, accordion in hand, a smokey gray cat below him. A ventriloquist dummy turned to the side, a smaller frame with a chunky colorful clown, and a vertical painting of dark blue sea background, shades of green, cream making the exoskeleton of a fish. In the middle of the windows, a yellow rectangular sign reads “Window Gallery: howardlernerart.com.” Part assemblage artist, painter, sculptor Howard Lerner has been in Greenpoint since 1986, living and working inside a building that used to be a Polish dance studio. At 69 years old, his life stories are as intriguing as his art. We got to chat with Lerner about art and life in Greenpoint. Full interview is on Greenpointers.com but here's a snippet: Amongst his large collages, Lerner's sculptures are nestled throughout, with smaller ones dangling from the ceiling. Dark and whimsical, it feels as though one has stepped into a Tim Burton film in a deep sea setting come to life. The piece that stands out is “Death to Spinocerebellar Ataxia," inspired by his late wife of 35 years, Lorraine, who passed away from the disease 6 months ago. “The story of Lorraine’s disease has 10 plagues, similar to the Exodus story in the Bible" and includes personal elements like their cat Shiva who is protecting her brain. At just 69 years young, experimenting with new mediums, continuing to create in the realm of the grotesque, mythological, and unheard parts of history, Harold Lerner is just getting started. //📷 Demetria Osei-Tutu #greempointers #artsingreenpoint #greenpointbrooklyn #greenpointhistory
