What do you think of when you hear “intimacy?” Most would probably mention something relating to romance or love...but it’s so much more than that. Intimacy in any relationship is a feeling of being close, and emotionally connected, seen, understood, felt and supported. It’s being able to share a whole range of thoughts, feelings and experiences without the fear of being judged or shamed. The knowing that I may share my most vulnerable parts and scariest pieces and still be met with love and compassion. The only way we can truly and vulnerably have intimacy is through communication - TALK. So the next time you think buying someone something nice will bring you closer, or offering some shallow based compliment on how they look, or appeasing their ego by only saying things in agreeance with their perspective or opinion (although it might at first), try having an honest heart-to-heart conversation instead and see how much more connected you feel.
