Chiton, exomis, himation .... dressing like a god[dess] was a full-time occupation in ancient Greece. The production of textiles was an endeavor which would occupy a large swath of a woman’s life. Spinning, weaving, and dyeing were essential tasks for crafting everyday garments, and the tools utilized were often dedicated at sanctuaries associated with deities tied to marriage and coming of age rites.
Few ancient Greek textiles survive but the colors and style of dress are preserved in more durable media, including marble sculpture—such as the distinctive peplos modeled here by the personification of peace, Eirene (06.311). Essentially a rectangular piece of cloth formed into a cylindrical shape and then creased across the top to create an overfold, the peplos would have been worn with each shoulder pinned into place by fibulae, creating the neckline and armholes so recognizable today.
The most famed peplos was that gifted to the olive wood cult statue of Athena on the Acropolis during her celebratory Panathenaic festival. Come to the Greek and Roman art galleries at The Met tonight and give this form of fashion a try! See the link in our bio for more information regarding Teens Take The Met! and tag us!
