Here’s a note from David about the course: “Music constantly escapes our attempts to define it — but that doesn’t mean we can’t try! In my School of Song class, I’ll be, yup, attempting to define what music can do, and why it’s necessary in my life (and maybe yours too?) I’ll probably go short on the fundamentals and long on harmonic conspiracy theories, melodic rumors, polyrhythmic disinformation, and song-structural fake news. I might have a very public meltdown about vocal arrangement. I hope that’s ok! Seriously though, this is my chance to share with you some of the thoughts and techniques, stories and strategies, processes and prosodies that have inspired me and taken my songwriting to (for me) new places over the years. Music may be impossible to define, but it’s certainly not impossible to explore — and I’m so excited to explore it with the School of Song community.
