@angelmaxinetv is the Ghanaian musician putting her life on the line to campaign against a proposed bill that would criminalise queer people and activists in her home country.
Prominent anti-LGBTQI+ MPs and conservative groups in Ghana have been pushing for the archaic bill to be made law since 2019, and activists say it has already led to a rise in arrests and attacks on queer people in the country before even being passed.
Up on the site, @jsd.lndn speaks to Maxine about the bill and how she, and organisations across Ghana, are fighting back in order to safeguard the country’s queer community. Swipe through to find out more about the bill, and head to our link in bio to read the story in full 🔗

[Image description: A carousel post using video, images and text from the article. The first slide uses a clip taken from the music video for Angel Maxine’s song ‘Wo Fie’, where she is standing in front of a rainbow flag background, with a content warning sticker on the top right corner. Headline text above says ‘The day Ghana’s anti-LGBTQI+ bill is passed, I will be in jail’ and smaller text underneath says ‘The country’s only openly trans musician Angel Maxine speaks to gal-dem about the dangers of life under the proposed bill that would criminalise queer people and activists.’
The second slide uses another clip taken from the 'Wo Fie' music video, with text appearing on screen that says ‘Ghana is colonially homophobic. LGBTQIA+ are persecuted. Denied basic rights. Safe spaces raided. Jailed unconstitutionally. Used as a distraction from state corruption. Now Ghana wants to make LGBTQUI+ advocacy illegal. You may soon be arrested for watching/sharing this video. Love your neighbour for you are also one.’ Text above the video says ‘When Ghanaian singer Angel Maxine released her music video for ‘Wo Fie’, she knew she couldn’t take it back – but that was the point.’ Text below the video in a white text box says ‘‘Wo Fie’ meaning ‘your home’ in Twi, premiered in July 2021, a month after a hugely controversial bill criminalising queer people and those who support their rights was leaked online.’ Full text is available as alt text for the rest of the slides.]
