New release today! I contributed a track to this wonderful compilation Healing Together: A Compilation for Mental Health Recovery, featuring 23 ambient-electronic artists from around the world.
When I was invited to create music for this, I immediately said yes but felt really busy and ultimately ended up creating this track in one night (in a totally dark room, oof). I didn't end up giving any comments about my track, or what inspired it -- I think because struggling with depression has been something that I've swept under the rug my entire life. I have never talked about this publicly but here goes.
I have had suicidal ideations since I was at least 13 and tried to commit suicide twice as a teenager and in my early 20s. I was finally told by a therapist that I have persistent depressive disorder when I was about 25 but didn't have health insurance long enough to easily prioritize therapy. Later, in my 30s, I went to therapy again and took an anti-depressant for a little while, which was helpful, but stopped after a year (not really sure why...).
Anyway, I'm sharing all of this with you because as a society, we have begun to more openly discuss mental health issues, and I also feel strongly that we should be able to speak openly about them.
If you are struggling, please know that you are not alone. It's also OK to ask for help, and there are a variety of treatments available. Please check in with your friends. (I am guilty of not doing this enough!)
Net profits of the compilation will go to Sounds of Saving, a non-profit fueling hope for mental health both by celebrating the power of human connection to music and directing people towards the resources they need before it’s too late.
