Our new image sonification of V404 Cygni’s light echo with @nasachandraxray!
⚫Light can’t escape from #BlackHoles, but surrounding material can produce intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation. As they travel outward, these blasts of light can bounce off clouds of gas & dust in space, similar to how light beams from a car’s headlight will scatter off fog. A new #sonification turns these “light echoes” from black hole V404 Cygni into #sound.
This is an inside-out scan, mapping the brightness of the dust scattering rings to volume. The sound itself is created with tick-like impulses and their density tracks the density of dust responsible for the scattering. X-ray light captured by Swift (red) is restricted to lower frequencies, higher frequency x-ray light captured by Chandra (blue) is restricted to higher frequencies .For background stars, brightness is mapped to musical pitch and volume. Listening to the light echoes this way is similar to travelling with the light from the black hole to here, hearing sheets of dust speckling your ship along the way.
