I rented a small bungalow in the north part of the island in a place called Cabarete. During my isolation there was a young Haitian boy who came most days wearing a mask to maintain the gardens that surrounded the property. For six months he never made eye contact with me or said anything, he was clearly very shy but we were naturally keeping our distance because of the pandemic. One day I caught a glimpse of his eyes when he looked up at me briefly, I’d never seen eyes so blue! When I approached him to say hi he looked at me confused and pointed to his ears and mouth. He was a young boy from Haiti, he was deaf and couldn’t speak. I walked inside and got my camera and pointed to it to ask him if I could take a photograph of him. He nodded looking a little nervous. I showed him the shot and his face lit up, I could tell he couldn’t believe the picture was him!’ He suffers from a rare genetic disorder/mutation called Ocular albinism or Waardenburg syndrome.
